Brenham, Texas |
| |
Brenham is located
in between Austin and Houston on Hwy 290. It is the county seat of
Washington County, “The Birthplace of Texas”. The town was first
named Hickory Grove and later, in 1843, changed its name to
Brenham in honor of the Republic of Texas hero Dr. Richard Fox
Brenham.
Brenham has endured many hardships in its history including the
1867 yellow fever outbreak, the burning of downtown by federal
occupation troops during the Reconstruction and destructive fires
in 1873 and 1877. Immigration, primarily of Germans and Polish,
peaked in the early 1880s and has left lasting traditions such as
the Maifest, still celebrated to this day. In the late 1800's
Brenham became a very significant marketing center with the
arrival of the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway.
